You may soon be able to buy alcohol in Grovetown on Sundays. That’s up to a vote Tuesday and this is stirring up a debate. News 12 is on your side with why some think this will bring much-needed business to the area, and others think it’s morally wrong.

Extra cars could mean extra money for the city. El Kiosko waiter Gustavo Mendoza plans to vote yes on the referendum.

“I think it will be a good idea for Grovetown and for the people who wanna come in Sunday and drink alcohol, they won’t have to go all the way to Augusta,” Mendoza said.

There are roughly 7,000 people in Grovetown, and his restaurant is the only one that serves alcohol.

Associate Pastor Wayne Smith from First Baptist Church of Grovetown thinks this is one too many.

“I do not think alcohol should be allowed period, much less on Sunday,” Smith said.

A yes vote will allow Grovetown to “promote and regulate the Sunday sale of distilled spirits and alcoholic beverages.” For you, that means you can get a glass of wine, beer or a mixed drink. Stores still won’t be able to sell any alcohol.

Grovetown Mayor Dennis Trudeau said large chain restaurants have a better chance of coming to Grovetown if the ordinance passes.

“I think it will attract other restaurants or maybe a hotel or motel, we could stand one in the city of Grovetown,” Trudeau said.

Associate Pastor Wayne Smith’s vote…definitely no.

“Personally, I believe it’s a day we should worship and give praise and glory to our Lord and Savior,” Smith said.

But alcohol revenues are important for Gustavo Mendoza’s business.

“Every Sunday people come in and try to buy alcohol, but they just walk out,” Mendoza said.

A case of progress versus moral values that voters will solve at the polls. Richmond, Columbia, and Aiken Counties currently allow the sale of alcohol in restaurants.
