A dragstrip could be coming to Augusta as early as next year. News 12 is on your side to explain what the city is doing to control the noise it will bring.

Folks living on Mike Padgett Highway are used to the sound of loud logging trucks. But now they may soon be saying hello to another noisy neighbor.

“I don’t like the idea at all, the noise factor is big. I don’t like that,” said Ann Smith.

For months, there’s been talk of building a dragstrip in South Augusta and it’s been accompanied with concerns about the abundance of noise it would generate.

“If the noise is too much I’d have to move. I’d have to find another place to live and to be able to sleep,” said Paul Henthorn.

Tuesday, Commissioner Jimmy Smith said the city needs to come up with a detailed noise ordinance. Thursday, the city attorney did just that.

This new ordinance states that if a dragstrip is built, all races would have to be ended by 11pm every night except for Saturday, lasting until 11:59p.m. On Sunday, races could not start before 2:30 p.m. keeping in mind churches in the area.

And folks here in South Augusta really value their peace and quiet so much that this church was even told to stop playing their chimes through the megaphone, so you can imagine the idea of a dragstrip right down the road would leave some people upset.

Ann Smith attends this church, right by the proposed site. She says the ordinance is good, but it still will be disruptive to the church’s other activities.

“We do have things on Saturday and Sunday, and sometimes during the day and I think that would not be good for us,” Smith said.

So the noise is one more factor that commissioners will consider as the race for a dragway continues.

The ordinance also states that anyone racing on the dragstrip after the set hours would be subject to up to one thousand dollars in fines or up to 60 days in jail.
