The houses are gone and the construction has started. Last week contractors began work on the Laney High School athletic complex. News 12 takes you to the site and shows you how the plans are taking shape.
Contractors have cleared the way for a new multi-million dollar football stadium. It takes the place of many homes that stood across from the high school.
J.W. Hill is in charge of clearing the area.
“After we started removing the streets, get the streets finished we will be doing away with a lot of sewer lines and water lines that we will be relocating,” Hill said.
Damir Filipovic is the general contractor in charge of building Laney High School’s football stadium and athletic complex. Plans call for a baseball and soccer field, a practice field, a field house, and a football stadium that will have 6,000 seats. However, there’s talk that the Richmond County Board of Education may add more.
“Football stadium will start through these trees all the way to Laney Walker Boulevard,” Filipovic said. “We are hoping they will add another 3,000-6,000 seats.”
The actual construction of the stadium will start in about a month and a half, that’s once everything has been cleared including some of the roads.
“We might pull off for a couple of months or so then we will be back in so we start it then we finish it,” Hill said.
The Board of Education still needs to buy out the owners of the houses where they plan to build a new parking lot.
“I’d like to see them torn down by the end of the week so I can get in and finish removing my trees,” Hill said.
That way, contractors will stay on track for their completion date.
If the plans stay the way they are, the new stadium should be completed by next August. If the additional seats are added, the completion date will be pushed back to November 2006.
