BLACKSBURG, S.C. (AP) -- Officials are investigating the drowning death of a Gaffney teenager whose body was pulled from the Broad River.

Coroner Dennis Fowler says in a news release that the body of 17-year-old Anthony Bernard Fair Junior was recovered Saturday evening near a hydroelectric dam about 15 feet from shore.

Fowler says Fair's mother told him the boy and several friends set up camp near the river earlier Saturday and planned to stay the night. Fair's mother told Fowler her son could not swim.

Friends ran more than a mile to a nearby road to find help after they say they saw Fair go under the surface of the water.

Fowler says he is investigating how the boy got in the river. An autopsy Sunday showed the boy drowned.
