North Augusta's Past May Help Plan Future

North Augusta is planning for the future and they need your help. They say your suggestions won’t fall on deaf ears. They city has a track record for putting their plans to work. News 12 is on your side with what’s already changed in North Augusta and what’s to come.

What would you like to see change in North Augusta?

“I would like to see more youth programs,” said Shot Turner.

“I think a movie theatre would be nice,” said Kara Cohn.

Now may be your chance to speak up.

Kathy Gilliland leads the non-profit foundation “North Augusta 2000.” They want to hear from you as they plan for the next five years.

“It’s going to be totally up to the public. We’re going to have public meetings and focus groups and let the public again decide what they feel like we need to implement in North Augusta,” said Kathy Gilliland.

“North Augusta 2000” did this five years ago when they were founded. They raised $1.8 million to pay for their projects and they’ve already met 80 percent of their goals.

One accomplishment, four books are given to every child ages 2-5. So far 20,000 books have been handed out and this program seems to be working. First grade test scores are up and they beat the state average.

Another accomplishment, cars are driving on phase one of the Palmetto Parkway. Character education is in the schools now. And “North Augusta 2000” acquired land where the city hopes to build a new municipal complex. Success you can see.

“People will have something to look back on and say okay, you said you were going to do this, you did this, now we’re going forward and we know you’ll be able to accomplish this,” Gilliland said.

Plans accomplished just in time to make more.
