Dragstrip Drama

"This is a very quiet neighborhood late at night, especially traffic is very thin," says Carl Walker. And Carl Walker wants it to stay that way. After living on Horseshoe Road for 69 years, the thought of a drag racing facility just yards from his house, leaves him not too happy.

"The sound, the noise, the traffic, the alcohol, the drugs, or whatever that comes with it," Walker said.

At the last Augusta Commission meeting, Commissioners voted to go ahead with preliminary plans to look into the multi-million dollar project that would be built off Mike Padgett Highway in South Augusta, possibly bringing in 5 million dollars annually to the city.

"I'm sure these things are going to run in to late hours. If it's during the weekday, these people have to get up real early and go to school and etcetera, so it's going to be a nuisance," Walker said.

"There's nothing out here at all," Gina Miller said. Gina Miller works at Cumbee's Grocery Store and lives right down the road from where the facility would be, and she says she'll sacrifice the noise if it means growth to the area.

"If it's too loud, put a barrel up, it's no more than a transfer truck coming down the road, so I think it's great, we need something," Miller said.

"I think they need to let it happen, it's fun, it's something, it's another way of money coming into the community as well," Amy Underwood said.

But interim Mayor Willie Mays says before homeowners start to form an opinion either way, they need to know that research is being done and no final decision has been made.

"It's in a very preliminary stage and so right now it's kind of premature to say in terms, particularly with nothing being written in stone yet about moving on with any project," Willie Mays said.
