It’s a rivalry that dates back 40 years and Friday the Lucy Laney Wildcats square off against the TW Josey Eagles. News 12 has more on the Garden City Classic and what some are calling the area’s biggest football rivalry.
There has been a steady flow of traffic in and out of Josey High School to buy tickets to Friday night’s game. Donnell Holt helped to organize the Garden City Football Classic and Tailgate Party, the clash between Laney and Josey. It’s a rivalry that dates back 40 years.
“It was a line between, one side of the road had to go to Josey and the other side had to go to Laney,” Holt said.
And at this particular game, old friendships will have to be put on the back burner.
“Everybody’s friends up until the week of the game,” Holt said.
“Serious business, they ain’t playing,” said Squeaky Freeman, Laney fan.
Carl Walker went to Laney and plans to tailgate for the first time.
“Everybody be here, it’s just like the Superbowl,” Walker said.
“I have went all the way to Thomasville, GA, with a transmission it wouldn’t go in reverse, but it go forward following behind Josey,” said David Haynes, Josey fan.
David Haynes may be Josey’s number one fan. He’s purchased a couple of t-shirts for the game. But nothing shows his Josey spirit more than his old truck outfitted with Josey newspaper clippings.
“When they win the ball game showing where they can see themselves on the truck,” Haynes said.
And depending on the outcome of the game, there may be room for one more clipping.
You can still buy your tickets at the game. They cost $5.
