Robbers are taking advantage of Halloween costumes by using them to conceal their identities. It was all too real for one South Augusta family. News 12 is on your side with why the next time you open your door to someone in costume, it may not be as innocent as trick or treat.

Troy Kitchens is putting the door back together that three masked robbers kicked in.

“You’re out there trying to make an honest living and I can’t say that they don’t work, but possibly they don’t work, but want to steal from somebody else,” Troy said.

Troy happened to be at work when his wife Melissa called and said she and their four-year-old daughter had been robbed by masked men who had guns.

“Sitting here normal and then all of a sudden the door just came flying open and I see three, possibly four men in Halloween masks,” Melissa said.

“The guy that kicked in the door open was branding from what my wife told me was a 12 gauge shot gun,” Troy said.

The men wearing Scream Halloween masks demanded money.

“I just handed it to him. He tried to open it with his hands and he couldn’t and they left and I shut the door,” Kitchens said.

Still shaken up, the family is trying to secure their home with new locks, new lights and getting into the habit of using their alarm system.

“You don’t think of keeping it on the whole time because we have a four-year-old in and out playing,” Troy said.

“We are putting in new security lights and reinforcing the doors. We are putting a deadbolt on the back door which we didn’t have one before,” Melissa said.

While the family thinks this was a random hit, they’re learning that a Video Warehouse down the street was also robbed right after them. This time it was only one person, but still wearing a Scream mask. And now the family wants others to be aware of masked robbers.

Investigators say there have been a rash of these types of robbers using masks, three this past week.
