It could take days to be sure the fire is out at a large warehouse that caught fire in Augusta Tuesday morning. It’s the Christian Millworks Company near Molly Pond Road and Gordon Highway. News 12 went there today and found out that what’s inside is fuel to the fire.

“I heard a crackling over here,” said Bernard Woodson. “It sounded like you was cooking something.”

It’s all Bernard Woodson cold hear looking out over his balcony at Days Inn.

“You can see the back side of the roof, it just collapsed,” Woodson said.

At 2:00 a.m. he was still up, going to visit his friend down the hall. He did that, but called 911, too.

“I’m calling to report a fire, I’m behind Days Inn. I was describing to them it was something like a lumberjack,” Woodson.

Lumber behind him was burning fast. Fire was crawling through lumber piece be piece at Christian Millworks.

“It’s a lot of fuel in there, that’s what caused such a big fire. All the fuel and wood and what-not,” said Lt. Hannan, Fire Investigator, Richmond County.

And the severity of the problem all around the firefighters is seen once the sun comes up.

Five fire trucks and two ladder trucks were brought in to fight this fire. In the next couple of days, a ladder truck and a fire truck will stay behind because there are still hot spots to be put out.

Investigators aren’t sure who or what started this blaze, but it was somewhere in the rear of the building that’s now more than halfway burned.

“We’re gonna have to look at it. The secret is to find the origin of the fire if we can,” Hannan said. “Our firemen are gonna be here a while.”

That’s okay, if it means keeping everyone safe including those fighting the fire or even just the man next door.

Lt. Hannan isn’t sure if there was a safety officer on the property at Christian Millworks, but says there always should be at a big business. Several firefighters were treated for getting too much smoke, but no one else was hurt.
