Aiken’s Gold Cup Polo Tournament continues this weekend. And the tournament is drawing more than fans, it could just mean a few new neighbors. News 12 is on your side to explain why such an elite tournament may mean big tax dollars for Aiken.

“One of the main features of the houses that are going up are the wonderful verandas,” said Viven Bunce, Eulalie Salley & Co. Realty.

Forget the house on the golf course. Equestrian realtors say the place to live in Aiken is on a polo field at Aiken’s New Bridge Polo and Country Club.

“It’s an opportunity for people to come who either want to be proactive in the horse community or who want to sit on the sidelines and literally watch,” Bunce said.

This month’s Gold Cup Polo Tournament is expected to bring new fans and players. And realtors are confident that will mean new neighbors.

“Property values have escalated, land is selling as fast as we can put it in the system,” said Suzy Haslup, equestrian realtor.

About 10 residential lots have sold in New Bridge, and several other larger plots of land for barns. Aiken is popular with polo players because of its flat land.

“I chose this piece because it was honestly like one of my favorite places,” said Kris Campsen.

Kris Campsen is a player in the Gold Cup and just bought 48 acres at New Bridge. Kris was drawn to Aiken by other players, a common trend according to realtors.

“When one or two people come they seem to bring others and it’s just escalated into what it’s become today,” Haslup said.

And with thousands out to watch the Gold Cup, realtors think Aiken’s land will be much more desirable.

“The Newbridge Tournament will really put Aiken on the map,” said Haslup.

Sunday is this weekend’s final match and there is another match the next Sunday. It costs $10 to get in. Click here for more information.
