Thousands fled the city of Biloxi, including another family with roots here in our area. News 12 has more on how the Travis family is coping.

Kevin Travis, his wife and two kids consider themselves lucky. And here’s what lucky means, they don’t know if their house is still standing, and their future is somewhat unknown.

Kevin Travis spends each day glued to television news, watching the destruction surrounding his home.

“It’s different when you see it on TV. That was the Grayhound, or you tell the kids daddy worked down that street there,” Kevin said.

Travis is watching from a safe distance, his father’s home in Grovetown, a welcome safehouse for his wife and two kids.

“I’m holding out hope but at the same time I have my wife, she pretty much thinks it’s all gone,” Kevin said.

For now, three-year-old Savion and his older brother Anthony pass the time with toys, a playful spirit that’s contagious.

It’s somewhat of a new beginning for the entire family. So the plan is to restart Anthony’s second grade education on Tuesday in hopes of keeping this straight A student on track.

“We know they’ve already been through a traumatic experience and we don’t want entering school to be another one. So we’ll do everything we can to make them comfortable and welcome,” said Joyce Long, River Ridge Elementary Principal.

Going back to school, a welcome relief for a family trying to cope.

“I don’t want them to see us get worried and frustrated because once they see me get worried then they should worry. I’m trying to hold it, but…it’s tough,” Travis said.

Kevin Travis doesn’t know how long his family will be living in Grovetown. He says it could be a couple months. And they evacuated before the storm last Sunday packing just enough for three days. Now they fear everything they left behind is gone.
