AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Symphony Orchestra Augusta announced Friday morning it will renovate the historic Miller Theater.

The Board of Directors voted unanimously to move forward with the project. The orchestra plans to make the Miller Theater its permanent home. The decision comes after a three-year study. No timeline for completion of the project was released.

The Miller Theater originally opened in 1940 and had been used for years for shows. The Symphony Orchestra hopes to use the facility to reach more people, grow its community education programs and work with other arts groups in Augusta.

The building was given to the Symphony Orchestra by local businessman, Peter Knox.
