Pernell Roberts, last star of TV's 'Bonanza,' dies

January 26, 2010

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Los Angeles Times reports that "Bonanza" star Pernell Roberts has died.

Roberts' wife Eleanor Criswell tells the paper that the actor died Sunday of cancer at his Malibu home. He was 81.

The ruggedly handsome star shocked Hollywood by leaving TV's "Bonanza" in 1965, at the height of the classic Western's popularity, then found fame again years later on "Trapper John, M.D."

Roberts was the last surviving "Bonanza" cast member.
