WAYNESBORO, Ga. (WRDW) -- A Waynesboro man was arraigned on Monday for tax preparation fraud charges.

Carlos Newton, 43, is facing 22 separate counts of preparing false tax returns while he was employed as a tax preparer between 2009 and 2011.

According to the indictment, Newton put false business names, incomes and expenses on tax forms, which would qualify his clients for refunds. Newton would allegedly take a portion of the fraudulent refunds.

If Newton is convicted, he faces a maximum of three years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count.
