Teen accused of killing sister claims innocence

Wednesday, July 18, 2012

KATHLEEN, Ga. (AP) -- A lawyer for a 17-year-old girl accused of shooting her 12-year-old sister to death says his client claims she's not guilty of the crime.

The Telegraph newspaper reports Houston County Public Defender Nick White says he has information he believes will exonerate Carmen Collins.

Authorities say Collins and her younger sister, India, were at home alone on July 3. Police say Collins obtained a .40-caliber handgun and shot her sister multiple times. Police say the teenager then used gasoline to set fire to the inside of the house.

A bond hearing in the case is scheduled for Thursday.
