AUGUSTA, Ga. -- New details are being released about the fatal shooting at University Hospital on Tuesday afternoon.
Chief Deputy Coroner Mark Bowen confirmed the victim, 57-year-old Tim Grooms of Lincolnton, Ga., died at 3:28 p.m. Grooms was shot at least two times and died immediately. His body has been sent to the GBI Crime Lab and an autopsy will likely be performed on Wednesday.
The suspect is 85-year-old Charles William Gorrell of Aiken, who is being held without bond at Richmond County Jail. Gorrell was taken into custody and is charged with one count of murder and one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
Investigators say the shooting happened inside the room where Gorrell's wife was being treated on the seventh floor of the hospital. Grooms is said to be the nephew of the suspect's wife. Deputies say there was "a long-standing dispute" between Grooms and Gorrell.
Allegedly, Gorrell shot Grooms, put down the gun and then surrendered to authorities.
"At no time were any of the staff, other patients or visitors to the hospital in any danger," said Richmond County Cpt. Scott Peebles in a news release. "The act was not random in nature and Grooms was an intended target. There is no indication that Gorrell threatened or intended to harm anyone else."
Counseling is available to patients and employees who need help in the aftermath of the shooting.
