SARDIS, Ga. (WRDW) -- A former Sardis police officer is dead after a Sardis police officer shot him. Officials say Dwayne Burke broke into his old police station in Sardis when he was caught in the evidence room by an officer on duty. The two got into an altercation, and Burke was shot and killed.
Neighbors like Marquevious Cleveland woke up to the chaotic scene Monday morning. The Sardis Police Department is right across from Cleveland's home.
"I came outside, seen everybody scattered around. I said, what happened? They said RoboCop done got shot."
Cleveland says the people in Sardis called Burke by the nickname "Robocop" while he was on duty. They say he was a real tough guy when it came to police work, which is how he earned the nickname.
Burke resigned in 2009 after nude photos of himself surfaced. A GBI investigation showed the photos were taken in the police department bathroom. He was accused of texting them to underage girls.
Burke was also arrested in 2010 on charges of felony terroristic acts. He was arrested yet again and spent some time in the McIntosh County jail after being caught with two handguns, a couple of controlled substances and 76 ecstasy pills. Last summer, he was charged with stealing $16,000 worth of jewelry from a home in Sylvania.
Early Monday morning, Burke once again found himself on the other side of the law. After a Sardis officer on patrol saw the back door of the police office broken into around 2 a.m., he went in to investigate. That's when he says he found Burke in the evidence room, holding an ax.
Patrick Morgan, special agent in charge for the GBI, says, "During that encounter with the male subject, there was an altercation that began and the officer with the Sardis Police Department did discharge his firearm."
The shot killed Burke and led to a full-scale GBI investigation that neighbors say is very out of the ordinary for Sardis.
"Well they're [the community] is shocked 'cause Sardis is sleepy, but it done woke up now," said Loretta Jones.
The GBI has not released the name of the Sardis officer who shot Burke.
