AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- The Richmond County Sheriff's Office wants your help after an increase in car break-ins over the past week.

Eight break-ins happened in the Waverly area overnight on Sunday. Cellphones, iPods and GPS units were taken from unlocked cars.

An attempted burglary also happened in the area during this time, but a neighbor was able to stop it from happening.

In Forest Hills, eight break-ins have happened between July 17 and 21. The thefts happened overnight and happened two at a time. Six vehicles had their windows broken and two were left unlocked.

In West Wheeler, six break-ins happened overnight on July 28. In these incidents, three vehicles had their windows smashed and three were left unlocked.

The Sheriff's Office has some advice to help prevent you from being the victim of a car break-in:

  • Make sure to lock your vehicles
  • Remove all items from sight
  • Expensive items and valuables should be taken out of the vehicle (or at least locked in the trunk)
  • Report suspicious activity to 911, giving them as much information as possible, including descriptions and vehicle tags

If you've noticed any suspicious people or activities in these areas, call the Sheriff's Office at (706) 821-1080.
