AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW) -- Two Columbia men have been arrested after allegedly shoplifting from the Walmart on Whiskey Road.
Security (loss prevention) at the store spotted the men leaving the store with unpaid merchandise that included bedding materials and a hair straightener. They followed them outside and saw them get into a car and drive away. Security followed.
Officers say the men apparently realized they were being followed and turned into the Aiken Estates neighborhood. They allegedly drove through the neighborhood recklessly. Officers say the men nearly struck several vehicles, including an off-duty officer’s vehicle.
The men eventually parked and ran into the woods.
The Aiken Department of Public Safety officers and the Aiken County Sheriff's Office bloodhound team searched the neighborhood and surrounding woods and eventually arrested both of them. They were hiding in a boat in a resident's garage.
One of the men has been identified as 30-year-old Martinus Gipson. Investigators are working to find out the name of the second man.
More charges could be coming for the duo's involvement in other crimes.
