SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Supporters of Georgia death row inmate Troy Davis are urging Savannah's top prosecutor to intervene with just hours to spare before Davis' scheduled execution.

Local activists say they have 240,000 signatures on petitions calling for Georgia officials to spare Davis' life. They were delivered in three boxes Wednesday to District Attorney Larry Chisolm's office.

Davis is scheduled to die Wednesday evening for the 1989 slaying of off-duty Savannah police officer Mark MacPhail. Davis insists he's innocent but has exhausted his appeals.

Chisolm didn't meet with the protesters. He said Tuesday he's powerless to interfere because the execution order was signed by a Superior Court judge.

Alicia Blakely, a civil rights activist supporting Davis, says the prosecutor could still use the power of his office to push for sparing Davis.
