AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- The man accused of raping a female student at Paine College is now in custody for Thursday's incident and is facing additional charges for previous incidents.
Jairus Rayshawn Dantzler, 18, has been charged with rape in connection to a sexual assault that happened in a bathroom at a dorm on campus.
Dantzler is also charged with attempted rape, two counts of burglary, armed robbery and possession of a knife for previous incidents, which include an attempted rape and burglary of another Paine College student and a home invasion and robbery on Feb. 16 off Belmont Avenue.
Richmond County Sheriff Richard Roundtree held a news conference at 2 p.m. to discuss new developments in the case.
“Richmond County has done a phenomenal job," said Brandon Brown, vice president of Institutional Advancement, in an emailed statement. “We are pleased that the campus’ 24-hour video surveillance system was able to assist in this investigation. We are also thankful to have Chief Joseph Nelson’s leadership to take us through this investigative process."
According to a news release, Paine College Chief of Campus Safety Joseph Nelson and other college officials met with students to discuss safety measures on Thursday night.
