Orangeburg officials: 50 dogs seized at 2 sites

Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) -- Authorities say they seized at least 50 animals from two locations in Orangeburg after getting a report of a dog on a roof.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reported Wednesday that authorities took many of the animals into protective custody. Traps have been set for those that evaded capture.

Orangeburg County Administrator Harold Young says the dogs and one cat had no food, many appeared malnourished and suffering from mange. He says the animals were living in areas covered in feces.

The report says the owner was contacted, but declined to comment.

No one has been charged. Young says animal control officials are familiar with the owner and got search warrants for two residences. Authorities spent five hours searching the sites.
