AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- It was around 8 p.m. on Saturday when Richmond County Sheriff's Office deputies were trying to apprehend 39-year-old George Harvey.
They caught up with him at the intersection of Olive Road and Gordon Highway when deputies say there was a struggle.
The Sheriff's Office released a statement saying, "Upon getting the subject in custody, he went into an apparent cardiac arrest."
The Richmond County coroner confirms Harvey was tased before he went into cardiac arrest.
According to a news release, deputies gave Harvey CPR until EMS arrived.
Witnesses told News 12 the struggle ended right outside of a gas station on the corner of the two roads. Many told News 12 they didn't know that Harvey passed away until they heard about it Sunday morning.
Harvey was transported to GRU Saturday night where he died around 8:45 p.m.
As News 12 reported in March, the Richmond County Sheriff's Office began phasing in the use of Tasers earlier this year.
"It's going to be great for our department because it's not only going to protect our officers, it's going to protect people that we're dealing with on a daily basis," said Lt. Robbie Silas back in March.
Each deputy is put through a special training course and, as deputies told News 12 in March, training includes deputies getting tased to help them better understand the weapon they're using.
The investigation into Harvey's death is just beginning.
The GBI is now handling the case to investigate the use of force and an autopsy is scheduled in Atlanta for Monday.
A lot of questions still unanswered. GBI representatives tell News 12 they have not filed an incident report.
We've also reached out to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office. Officials say they are officially "on pause" and are not answering nay further questions until Monday.
So, right now, there is still no information on how many times Harvey was tased or whether he had a pre-existing condition.
