EVANS, Ga. (WRDW) -- After a man was attacked at a park on Memorial Day, he's getting support from more than just his friends, he's getting it from complete strangers.

Jeffery "Colten" Godsey posted a picture of his injuries, and within days, it's traveled nationwide.

"I don't know him personally but praying for a fast recovery, pray for Colten," said Savanna Kendra, as she read a comment about Jeffery Godsey.

But on Twitter, he's known as Colten.

"You'll see pictures, you'll see posts, you'll see prayers," she said.

Godsey, 22, was out playing a game of volleyball with friends on Memorial Day evening.

What happened next, some say is hard to explain.

"I feel like this should be a common sense kind of thing, why start fights like this," Kendra said.

She wasn't even there that evening, but thanks to social media, she knows all about it.

Witnesses say Ryan Meagher approached Godsey and began punching him.

Ten seconds later, they say Godsey was out cold.

"They could have walked away and settled it with words and not physical activity," Kendra said.

Twitter was buzzing with the hashtags #Colten, #PrayingForColten, #TeamColten and many more.

"People make mistakes all the time, that doesn't mean they deserve severe injuries or fatal injuries even," she told News 12.

Friends of Godsey who were there that night wouldn't go on camera but tell News 12 he never caused any trouble and always was the life of the crowd.

They say this explains the overwhelming support from strangers thousands of miles away -- even from his own backyard, from someone who has never met him.

"I don't really know the guy, but my prayers do go out," Kendra said.

Another prayer, added on top of many more for a young man known as #Colten.
