Inmate charged in weekend murder at Augusta State Medical Prison

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- The GBI is investigating a weekend murder at the Augusta State Medical Prison.

After an initial investigation, Thomas Tiraboschi was charged in the murder of Chris Lowery.

Tiraboschi was being held for a vehicular homicide charge from 1995 in Peach County.

Lowery was being held on a murder charge from 2010 in Effingham County.

GBI Special Agent in Charge Pat Morgan says the murder happened Saturday at 3 a.m. The GBI was called in to investigate at 4:15 a.m.

Tiraboschi was taken to the Richmond County Jail for processing and then returned to the Department of Corrections. He was then taken to a different facility.

Investigators won't say what led to the killing at this time.
