Greenville Co. sheriff: 107 gaming machines seized

Friday, Aug. 17, 2012

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- Greenville Sheriff's deputies and State Law Enforcement Division agents have seized 107 video gambling machines at three internet cafe sites.

Greenville County Sheriff Steve Loftis says the machines look more like computers than the old video poker machines. Loftis says undercover agents found most are slot games with cash payouts.

Greenville prosecutor Walt Wilkins says the internet cafes are gambling houses and law enforcement intends to halt the illegal gambling.

No arrests have been made.

Twelve years ago, the state Supreme Court pulled the plug on video poker. Defenders in courtrooms across the state argue the new machines are legal as long as they promote products or services.
