AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- A former deputy is now behind bars after a grand jury indicted him for tampering with evidence.

The Richmond County Sheriff's Office says Wade Smith turned himself in at 9 a.m. Thursday. Along with the tampering charge, Smith is also facing a violation of oath of office charge.

The Sheriff's Office started investigating Smith in May for an incident that happened in November 2012. Investigators received a complaint he improperly handled and documented marijuana, a handgun and cash after a bust.

The Sheriff's Office terminated him on June 4 and the case was sent to the District Attorney's Office for review.
