MCDUFFIE COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW) -- A community is upset after a fire took out a little piece of their history.

Crews battled a fire at the Old Dixie Inn in Boneville Tuesday just before 11 p.m. The inn is on the 2000 block of Boneville Road off Highway 278.

Fire officials say there was no power to the building and there was clear weather last night, so it's being considered suspicious. Firefighters say the glow of the fire could be seen for miles. The building was burned to the ground.

The Old Dixie Inn has a historic background. Multiple Boneville blogs and sites have linked the former inn to the early 1900s. It's said to have had a train depot within walking distance so people from Augusta would arrive in Boneville to picnic, swim and spend days at the inn.

The inn has long been rumored to be haunted. Strangeusa.com says a despondent guest at the hotel once hanged himself from the stairway rail.
