AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The U.S. Attorney's Office is slamming Attorney Joe Neal Jr.

Neal's lawyer asked for a summary of why federal judges wanted to bar him from practicing in court, so they handed it down. You can read the full document here (PDF).

The documents state his actions were of a "predatory nature" and his conduct is "base, depraved, vile and contrary to the societal norms of decency and honor."

This comes a few moths after Neal pleaded guilty to a drug possession charged after rape allegations surfaced from his teenage babysitter.

Some excerpts from the document:

  • "This conduct is base, depraved, vile and contrary to the societal norms of decency and honor. Conduct that shocks the public conscience as being inherently base, vile or depraved reflects adversely on your fitness to practice law and therefore your continued membership in this Bar."
  • "Allowing persons to practice as attorneys, who ought, on every ground of propriety and respect for the administration of the law, to be excluded from such practice, brings disgrace upon any court obliged to receive him as one of its officers ..."
  • "The lack of character you have demonstrated in these premises is diametrically in opposition to the good character required for continued membership in this Bar."
  • "A member whose moral compass is broken is unfit to remain a member of the Bar whose primary duties require trustworthiness, ethical behavior and devotion to the societal standards of fairness, integrity and upright conduct."
  • "The stature of the Bar as a whole is harmed when any of its practicing members are serving sentences for criminal convictions."
  • "Specifications above demonstrate a public and private character that would have prevented your admission to the Bar had it been known at the time of your application, would heave exposed your oath as a falsehood and provides grounds for your suspension or removal."
