AUGUSTA, Ga. -- A teenager is dead after crashing his truck on the Bobby Jones Expressway. Taylor Durrence, 19, died Friday after his silver truck slammed head on into an 18 wheeler. It happened just after 10 in the morning.
Taylor had just left school and was on his way to meet his girlfriend. Deputies say he was speeding and lost control of his truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
"It's a shock I can't get over it. It's a shock," said his grandmother Betty Pearson. "It's gonna be a big big void in our lives. Won't be another Taylor."
Taylor was a student at Augusta Tech and graduated from Harlem High school just last year.
"He was wonderful, he was great. I'm not just bragging I'm telling the truth," said Betty.
"Funny, hilarious always knew what to say to crack me up," added his brother Corey Durrence.
"He always had a smile. Didn't argue, didn't complain," said his uncle Doug Pearson. "He's a good kid. You just hate to see it end this way."
Especially after Taylor had survived so much. In 2003, Taylor was one of New's 12 "Miracle Children" for our annual children's hospital telethon. That Christmas, Taylor had a horrible accident with a new bow and arrow. It left one of the arrows lodged in his eye and brain. He was rushed into surgery.
"That was awful too," said his grandmom. "They gave us a book to read about what to expect and it had in there that he could be a vegetable but he wasn't. He got over it."
Doctors say it was a miracle Taylor survived brain surgery at just nine years old.
"He enjoyed life and he didn't ever forget his accident and he was grateful," said his grandmom.
"He had a will to fight and he done good and this happens. Like it shouldn't be," added his uncle.
It was a life cut way too short.
"Just walking by his door and knowing that he ain't here, It's gonna be tough," said his brother. "Knowing I won't see him for a long, long time...I can tell you right now, ain't gonna be a day that goes by that I don't think. I'm gonna miss him, I'm gonna miss him like crazy."
So far funeral arrangements have not been made. Stay with News 12 for updates.
