AUGUSTA, Ga. -- A local stepfather is confused, angry and upset after witnessing his own child being murdered.

"She, she gone, man. She gone, and it don't make no sense. I loved her. I loved her like a daughter of mine," Anthony Acree said.

A parent's worst nightmare coming true right in front of his eyes. Keya Mitchell, 34, was gunned down while her stepfather and mother were in the room.

"He came in the house. When she let him in, he pushed the door open. The only thing he said was, 'You think that s*** funny,' and that was all he said. And he went to shooting," Acree said.

Investigators say the shooter was her husband, Harvey Mitchell.

"He had to know what he was fixin' to do when he came to our house," Acree said angrily.

While no one is sure what Mitchell was thinking, his visit to the apartment changed this family's life forever.

"I think I was the last one that felt the pulse on her when she was laying on that floor," Acree said as he thought back to that terrible moment.

Ollie Brinson was staying with her brother in an apartment nearby. She can't believe something so cruel happened so close to where she was sleeping.

"Somebody's life is gone. Somebody lost a mother or a sister. Why would a person take somebody's life over something, probably something very simple?" Brinson questioned.

Acree says the couple was separated. She was living with her parents until she could find a place of her own.

Now, she'll never get that chance.

"It's gonna be a while before I get over this, but I'll never forget it," Acree said sadly.

The Richmond County Sheriff's Office is still looking for Mitchell. They're asking for your help.
