AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WRDW) -- A 54-year-old father and grandfather is still in critical condition after being shot last week at a truck stop in Aiken.

The truck driver from coastal South Carolina was making a quick stop at Kent's Korner at exit 18 when he was shot three times.

Investigators still don't have a suspect.

"He's so strong and now he's so helpless," said Lynn, the wife of the man who was shot.

Every day for the past week she has visited her husband at the hospital.

"I stay at the hospital with him," she explained. "I got a little bed thing in there for me and I just look at him at night and just stare at him."

Her husband, a 20-year Navy veteran, has been driving trucks on and off for years stopping at truck stops.

"We've been married 30 years, and actually, we've probably been together 15 years," she joked about how often he was on the road.

Last week, his stop in Aiken changed his life.

"It's hard to believe, I didn't believe it," Lynn said.

Investigators say last Tuesday he was standing in the truck lot having a conversation when a man came up from behind his truck demanding money. That man had a gun and a cloth over his nose and mouth.

"He shot my husband, and my husband threw the coffee on him, and then he shot my husband twice," Lynn said.

Her husband was rushed to GRU with gunshot wounds to the arm, the chest and the stomach. He's been in critical condition ever since with a bullet lodged in his spine.

"I wanna know why he did it and how he could've done something like that," she said.

She also wants to know who the person is before it happens again.

"If he gets by with it, he's gonna do it again," she said.

For now, all she can do is sit by her husband's bedside and wait.

"We've been married 30 years, and I'm waiting on my 30 more years to come," she said.

His family says the suspect didn't end up taking anything from him.

He's in protective custody, so we aren't giving his name, but his family says he is opening his eyes. He still can't talk or move his legs.

The suspect is described as a black male with shoulder-length dreadlocks who is between 5'8" and 5'10" and weighs between 135 to 150 pounds. He was wearing a white T-shirt with blue jeans that were cut off near the knees. They say he's possibly in his early 20s.
