AUGUSTA, Ga. -- More firings have been announced at the Augusta Youth Development Campus.

Dismissals include Corrections Sgt. Dorothy Blair and Juvenile Corrections Officer Dominique Harris.

Department of Juvenile Justice Commissioner Avery Niles says their firings are connected to the escape of five inmates back in October.

“These corrections officers failed to do their jobs and as a result of the escape, DJJ failed to protect the Augusta community," he said in a news release.

On Oct. 19, the five inmates were able to escape, steal a car and set off a police chase and manhunt in the greater Augusta area. All of the escaped inmates were taken back into custody within the weekend and were transferred to separate facilities and charged with escape.

Blair and Harris were both previously suspended with pay and put on administrative leave.

This all comes one day after the firing of the YDC principal and two days after the firing of a corrections officer.

The YDC was first thrust into the spotlight in November 2011 when 19-year-old inmate Jade Holder was fatally assaulted.

The escape of the five inmates happened in October of this year. Assaults inside the facility's walls happened on both Nov. 4 and Dec. 2. In the November assault, which involved five inmates, one inmate sustained a broken jaw. In the December assault, one inmate was taken to the hospital.

Niles says a full-time facility director will be in place by the end of the year.
