EMANUEL COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW) -- About 100 feet separates a neighbor's house and the house of Samantha and Randy Scott.
The two are accused of killing Kenneth Wiley Janes, the father of Samantha Scott.
"It's still unsettling to know that it happened that close," said a neighbor who wanted to remain unnamed. "I just don't see how anyone could harm their own father."
Janes was visiting his daughter and granddaughter at their Swainsboro home last month.
"I didn't think anything of it, I thought he was the maintenance man because I saw him that one time," the neighbor said.
But soon, other neighbors noticed something.
"I didn't see him or hear from him or anything else," said the neighbor.
Then, nearly a month later, police found his body in a makeshift grave at the Scott Family Cemetery in Northern Emanuel County.
"How did they do it? What they do it? When did they do it? Was I home? Was I out? Was my kids asleep? Did they do it broad daylight?" the neighbor asked.
Questions that investigators for the Emanuel County Sheriff's Office are trying to answer.
Besides murder, the couple also faces gun and financial fraud.
District Attorney Hayward Altman says the couple used Janes' debit cards and collected his Social Security benefits.
"Finances was the motivation behind the actual homicide," Altman said.
And for such a small community, a tragedy like this hits a nerve for all of the people here.
"Everybody knows everybody, we're all kind of friends together, so it's a reaction you don't really believe something like this could happen in your community," Altman said.
A preliminary trial for the couple will be on March 28.
