EDGEFIELD COUNTY, S.C. -- A Strom Thurmond High School student was arrested after allegedly having multiple weapons in his car on school property.

When officials searched 17-year-old Matthew Edwards' truck on Monday, they found what appeared to be marijuana cigarettes, a 12-guage shotgun, a .22-caliber rifle, a pellet gun and ammunition.

Edwards was arrested and booked on weapons and drug charges. He has since been released on bond.

It all started when Edwards and a special education student were believed to have marijuana on them at Friday's football game. The special education student was found with a substance believed to be marijuana. Edwards was able to get away on Friday but authorities had probable cause to search his car on Monday.

The superintendent and principal are both recommending that Edwards be expelled. The district has a zero-tolerance policy for weapons on campus.

The superintendent says a hearing should be held within 10 days. If Edwards is expelled, he can appeal to the school board.
