NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. -- The Georgia State Patrol has cited four drivers who were involved in the crash involving multiple school buses last month.

The buses were carrying students and chaperones from Burke County Middle School to Six Flags Over Georgia.

The crash on Interstate 20 in Newton County injured 61 people, most of whom were treated and released the same day.

Sgt. Matt Gunnin, assistant post commander of the Georgia State Patrol post in Monroe, explained what happened: “The first bus in line began braking for the slowing traffic ahead, which caused the other buses to brake. The second bus struck the first bus in the rear. The third and fourth buses moved to the right lane in an attempt to avoid the collision, but the fourth bus was hit in the rear by the fifth bus, which caused the fourth to hit the third in the rear. The fifth bus continued forward and struck the second bus in the rear. The fifth bus was then hit from behind by the sixth bus, and the passenger car struck the rear of the sixth bus."

The driver of the second bus, 48-year-old Betty Harrison Dukes; the driver of the fifth bus, 44-year-old Angela Benjamin Anthony; and the driver of the sixth bus, 37-year-old Stephanie D. Pierce, were all cited for following too closely. The driver of the passenger vehicle, 37-year-old Latarsha Moneek Owens, was also cited.

The court date for the four drivers is set for Sept. 18 in Covington, Ga.
