AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Richmond County deputies are searching for a killer after a teenager was shot to death in the backyard of a home in Barton Village.

Kathy Middleton looks at the crime scene tape in her backyard.

"It really shook me up, it really did," said Middleton, who lives in the home on Amsterdam Drive with her father, son and brother.

On Wednesday night she had just laid down for bed around 9:30 when she heard the shooting start.

"It was like five gunshots and I jumped on the floor," she said. "My son said he just covered up."

Middleton's son was in the back corner room of the house when that shooting happened. He said out his window he heard running and arguing in this back yard. Seconds later, shots were fired.

"My neighbors across the street, her kids were sitting right there," she said. "That's what they do. They were playing and they had just gone in the house and the bullet could've hit them or anything. Any child could've been hit by a bullet or killed."

Unfortunately, two people were hit. The shooting sent one person to the hospital and left 16-year-old Martez Davis dead.

"I didn't know the 16-year-old, but it just broke my heart when the cop told me that he died," Middleton said. "He ran right down there and died. It's just really sad. It really is."

It's something she says has become all too common.

"These kids out here now they've gotten so awful and they don't show anybody any respect," she said. "They get these guns, they get to shooting and they don't know what they're shooting at."

She says she hoped people, especially teenagers, would've thought twice before picking up a gun just one week after the tragedy in Newtown.

"I would have thought it would have, but evidently it just seems like they can pick up a gun. I don't know where they're getting these guns from. I really don't know."

Just days before Christmas, one family is now without their son and Middleton says it needs to stop before it happens to someone else.

"Only thing I can do is pray for them and just hope that their parents talk to them before it's too late, before anybody else gets killed," she said.

Investigators are working to figure out exactly what led to the shooting. They have not released any information on a suspect but say they do have a few leads they are following.

The person in the hospital was shot in the leg and is expected to fully recover.
