AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice has confirmed that an inmate was injured at the Augusta Youth Development Campus Sunday evening and the facility is under lockdown.

The inmate was injured during a fight inside of a residence unit around 6:55 p.m. The DJJ says the inmate was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

According to preliminary reports, no other juveniles were involved in the assault. The DJJ says YDC supervisors called 911 at approximately 7:03 p.m.

DJJ Commissioner Avery Niles said in a news release that "precautionary measures" were immediately put into place after the incident.

The inmate accused in the incident was moved and "will be securely detained under constant observation." The DJJ says felony charges are expected to be filed against the alleged perpetrator.

The DJJ Internal Investigations Unit will be in charge of the investigation. The DJJ has also asked for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to help.

"We have been making progress at Augusta. We will take any additional precautions needed during this investigation and we will enforce what measures are necessary to provide a secure environment for the youth in our custody at Augusta YDC," said Commissioner Niles in a news release.

The investigation into the assault could continue for several weeks.

This isn't the first time the Augusta YDC has seen problems. Just last year, 19-year-old Jade Holder was killed during a brutal beating inside the facility's walls. Since then, Michael Everidge has been convicted of his murder. News 12 was able to uncover corruption and other wrongdoings at the YDC. Click here to read more about this investigation.
