AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The regional supervisor with the Department of Family and Children Services has been suspended from her position after being charged with child cruelty in Augusta.
Sgt. Dan Carrier with Richmond County confirmed 34-year-old Sharonika Wimberly from Augusta is in jail without bond, accused of beating her daughter with a broom. He says the incident allegedly happened after her 15-year-old daughter went over her minutes on her cellphone.
We are told Academy of Richmond County administrators saw the bruising and swelling on the child and called the 1-800-DFCS hotline to report the suspected abuse.
The hotline notified the Richmond County Sheriff's Office, and an investigation followed.
We are told the child was taken to the hospital and treated for her injuries. She was then turned over to her father.
Wimberly is in charge of DFCS for Burke, Columbia and Richmond counties.
DFCS released the following statement:
"Based on the severity of the allegations, the employee is being placed on suspension. The Department will closely monitor the legal process and proceed accordingly as events warrant."
