AUGUSTA, Ga.--Just a little ways down from the Augusta Rowing Club you'll find the Augusta Pier. It's been in a state of disrepair for years, but the Augusta Crimestopper group plans to change that.

Griff Griffin says this pier is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, along the Savannah River. His Augusta Crimestopper team has been leasing the space from the Riverfront Marina, and they have big plans to fix it up.

He says, "It gives us a very large platform to entertain from, raise money at, and have meetings."

By turning the area on the river into a meeting place and event space, they are hoping to raise some funds for their growing group, cash that can help bring in new Crimestoppers, and pay for more rewards for tipsters.

Griffin said, "We're gathering new members right now. Augusta is going to get the Crimestoppers they deserve. If they want a strong Crimestoppers network, they'll support Crimestoppers."

Along with working on the pier, the group is also busy making command posts for the team.

Griffin explains, "It's going to look very similar to a teepee, the difference is when you walk in, it will be bristling with technology and we use this technology to monitor a lot of different things to try to stay on top of crime."

They've already started chipping away at the teepee plan, stripping bark from trees donated by International Paper.

The teepees will serve as more than just mobile command posts though, they'll also be used for meeting spaces to attract new members.

"If you tell them, 'Hey, let's go to the river and hang out in a teepee,' it gets them to our location. We can show them the fleeing and evading felons we have on DVD."

So, from teepees to renovating piers, the Augusta Crimestopper group says they'll try just about anything to make Augusta a safer place to live.

They're hoping to have the pier up and running for events and parties within the next year. Of course, that will all depend on how the funding comes in.
