Community mourns death of barber with vigil outside his shop

BEECH ISLAND, S.C. (WRDW) -- A barber shop turned into a memorial to remember a man who was just trying to live the "American dream."

"I messed up my hair and had to come up here and let him straighten it out. He said, well I don't know who cut that, he said, but you got a jaw back here. So he straightened it out for me," vigil organizer Margie Jones said.

That is one of the good memories coming from the Island Cut Barber Shop on Sand Bar Ferry Road where Zann Worrell worked.

"He just enjoyed the business. He loved talking to whoever came in, even if they didn't get a haircut," said Worrell's mother, Juanita Worrell.

On Saturday afternoon, two men did come to the shop, but instead of getting a haircut, Worrell's life was cut short.

Deputies say it started out as an attempted robbery and ended with multiple shots.

"The Bible says the love of money is evil. They didn't need no money. Get a job! Get a job!" Jones exclaimed.

The Aiken County Sheriff's Office says 21-year-old Demarcus Booker and 18-year-old Raphael Wooden will both be charged with armed robbery and murder.

"I'm putting it in the law's hand and God's hand first, and I know justice will be served," Worrell said.

While justice can't take away the pain of losing a son, Worrell's mother says a gathering like the one outside his barber shop proves how much he was loved.

"By the crowd here, I know that he was well loved just as much as I love my son," she said.

"We love you, Zannie, but God love you best," Jones said.

Booker and Wooden are being held in the Richmond County Jail awaiting their extradition to South Carolina.

Deputies say it was a witness who followed them across the border and got their location and license plate number, which helped officers find the two so quickly.
