COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. -- News 12 has learned a Columbia County Sheriff's Office deputy has been terminated for driving under the influence on his motorcycle.
Deputy Gregory Smith was arrested in Richmond County this morning around 1 a.m. for DUI, speeding and handlebars violations.
According to Cpt. Steve Morris, Greg Smith was terminated for violating policy, specifically, conduct unbecoming to an officer.
"To say that we are disappointed is an understatement. As we've demonstrated in the past, we enforce the law, and in this case, enforce our policies, no matter who is involved. To have an officer involved in such activity is not only a violation of the law and the public's trust but also a dishonor to this agency and the deputies who uphold the integrity and honor that goes along with the badge," said Morris in a statement.
Smith is a former Richmond County deputy but began working with the Columbia County Sheriff's Office in 2009.
