GROVETOWN, Ga. -- A backyard pool on Pauline Street became a crime scene on Tuesday after 3-year-old Raydin Holbrooks was found under the water.

"When we arrived, obviously a lot of people were in panic. There was CPR being performed on the little child. EMS arrived and transported the child to Doctors Hospital where she was pronounced dead," explained Columbia County Sheriff's Cpt. Steve Morris.

Somehow the toddler made her way from the home near the beginning of Pauline Street to the end of the road and then all the way past the neighbor's gate and into the pool.

"We're not exactly sure what route she took. If she went by road, it's approximately a half a mile," Morris said. "If that's the case, then the child was missing for at least a half and hour, maybe up to an hour."

It's a timeline they're working to break down.

"That's one of many things we're taking a look at to determine how long she was missing, how did she get there, what route she took -- so we're looking at it all from beginning to end," Morris said.

Negligence charges could be filed in the death.

"The child's aunt, which is also the guardian in this case, the aunt's daughter and daughter's boyfriend were in the home. As far as charges, that's yet to be determined," Morris said.

It's an innocent death that even affects these investigators.

"So preventable. That's what makes it difficult," he said.

Investigators are waiting on the autopsy results before they move forward.

One of many theories is that Raydin followed a dog to the property.

We spoke with the pool's owner. She was very upset and heartbroken. She says she works with children every day and couldn't go to work Wednesday. She told me they've had the pool for 25 years and are now planning to add cameras to their property.
