Columbia Co. deputies arrest soccer player for assault of referee

Thursday, July 26, 2012

GROVETOWN, Ga. -- A soccer player is looking for a new league to play in after Columbia County investigators say his emotions got the best of him.

Deputies are charging 44-year-old Johnny Alberto Zuniga from Beech Island with assaulting a referee during a match with the Augusta Amateur Soccer League.

According to the incident report, the referee, Vincent Floyd II, called Zuniga for a penalty. Floyd says that's when Zuniga started yelling at him, stepping on his feet and kicking him in the shins. Investigators say Floyd tried to red card Zuniga, who then started choking the referee.

The Sheriff's Office says Floyd went to the hospital coughing up blood. When they were questioning him, deputies say they noticed red marks on his neck.
