Sunday, September 1, 2013

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Officers pulled the body of a 61-year-old man out of the Savannah River this morning.

Georgia DNR says Ralph Taylor was kayaking with two of his friends Saturday afternoon when he went missing.

We're told Taylor was the least experienced of the three kayakers and ran into some trouble when he split from the group to go around "Goat Island."

According to officers, when his friends rounded the island, they saw only Taylor's kayak floating in the water.

He was reported missing to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office shortly before 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon. A search began soon after.

Georgia DNR says they searched until 11 p.m. Saturday night. The search began again Sunday morning around 8:30 a.m. Taylor's body was found shortly before 11 a.m. a couple hundred yards from the island.

Rescuers tell News 12 Taylor was not wearing a life jacket, but he had one attached to his kayak.

At this point, officers do not expect foul play. His body will be transported to the GBI Atlanta Lab for an autopsy on Tuesday.
