BARNWELL, S.C. (WRDW) -- A body has been recovered from a smoky home in Barnwell. Coroner Lloyd Ward says an autopsy will be conducted Saturday morning.
Ward says a fiancé of the victim opened the backdoor of a home on Berry Street around 10:30 a.m. on Friday. When he did so, black smoke reportedly billowed from the home. Ward says the fire had put itself out before firefighters and an EMS crew arrived.
Emergency responders located the body of a 56-year-old Donna Dempsy on the floor of the house.
The S.C. State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) arson unit, Barnwell Police Department, and the Coroner's Office are all investigating the fatal fire.
