AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Investigators say 42-year-old Leonard Sapp kidnapped and carjacked Ashley Nay and her 2-year-old daughter at knifepoint at the Kangaroo Express on Jones Street Wednesday night.
"I went in to pay, and when I came out and buckled my daughter up in the passenger seat, he was already behind me with the knife to my side," Nay said.
She says he forced her to drive to the Hicks Street area.
"He told me not to do anything stupid or he'd kill my daughter. He touched me between my legs and said that he was going to rape me.," she said.
Carrie Lou Douglas, who lives on Hicks Street, says she saw the whole thing happen.
"Me and my daughter were sitting here on the front porch, and we saw a truck coming around that way full blast! I mean full blast," she said.
That's when Nay saw a car pulling into a driveway nearby, so she pulled in and slammed on the brakes.
"He punched me in the face for stopping the car," she said.
The punch broke her nose, but distracted Sapp long enough for the neighbor to pull her daughter from the car.
"He pulled me over into the passenger seat and as I was getting over, I cut off the car," she said.
The move gave her time to escape from the car before he drove two houses down and crashed into a trash can and then a car. Sapp then got out of the truck.
"He tried to flee the scene. We chased him up into the road, where he tried to maneuver me off," said Marcus Taylor.
But Taylor and two others caught up with Sapp and held him down until Richmond County deputies could get there.
"It could have been a whole lot worse because this lady could've died," Taylor said.
Nay is recovering and shaken but says she won't be going to the gas station again anytime soon.
"I am never getting gas again ... My boyfriend will be getting my gas from now on," she said.
AUGUSTA, Ga. -- An Augusta man is in the Richmond County Jail for allegedly kidnapping a mother and her child.
Richmond County investigators say 42-year-old Leonard Sapp held Ashley Nay and her 2-year-old at knifepoint at the Kangaroo gas station on Jones Street Wednesday night.
Deputies say he then began to sexually assault her. Nay began screaming for help and a bystander was able to pull the child from the vehicle. Sapp was chased by three men who held him until deputies arrived.
Nay and her child only had superficial injuries.
Sapp is charged with kidnapping, carjacking, possession of a knife in the commission of a crime and criminal attempted rape.
