AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- A man and his father-in-law have been arrested in connection to illegal gambling activity after a months-long investigation.
The arrests were made after undercover officers discovered video gambling machines were being operated from inside the C-Mart Gas Station on Mike Padgett Highway.
Investigators say cash payouts were being made. The Richmond County Sheriff's Office says while most video gambling machines are legal to operate, cash payouts are not allowed.
The investigation ended in the arrests of 36-year-old Hemant Phutane and 57-year-old Mukundlal Jayswal on Tuesday. Phutane is the store owner, while Jayswal is the store clerk and father-in-law of Phutane.
Both men are charged with felony commercial gambling, misdemeanor possession of a gambling device and misdemeanor keeping a gambling place.
Investigators confiscated the video gambling machines and $56,000 in cash.
