ABBEVILLE, S.C. -- The Abbeville County sheriff has been charged with one count of misconduct in office.
If Sheriff Charles Goodwin is convicted, the misdemeanor offense is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
Goodwin is accused of receiving cash "kickbacks" from county funds that were paid to a local auto body repair shop between January 1998 and November 2011.
The indictment says Goodwin allegedly had a South Carolina Department of Corrections inmate to work on his personal cars and property.
The case will be prosecuted by the Attorney General's Office.
Goodwin's hearing is scheduled for noon on Friday in Greenville County.
