New molestation charges in Meloan case

News 12 at 11 o'clock, July 26, 2007

AIKEN CTY, SC---Ed Meloan is facing new charges, and now his wife Susan is also facing charges in the case. Those new charges against Ed Meloan include: 7 counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, 4 counts of a lewd act on a minor, and one count of sexual exploitation of a minor related to film, videos, and electronic images of children engaging in sexual activities.

The paperwork also alleges that in 1968, Meloan had child pornography inside WRDW's building.

The biggest surprise in the case surrounds Meloan's wife Susan. Mrs. Meloan is now facing one count of a lewd act on a minor and one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Ed Meloan, who is 74 years old, is under house arrest, wearing a satellite tracking device.

In an Aiken courtroom Thursday, Meloan rolled into his bond hearing in a wheelchair to face a judge and confront his past. His wife Susan sat nearby wearing bright red handcuffs. They came expecting to hear the charges against them. What they did not expect was to hear a voice from the past. From behind the glass separating an adjoining room from the courtroom, an alleged victim said "Thank you for 40 years of hell... I'm here in your face." Meloan showed little reaction.

The couple's attorney, Victor Hawk says the new charges against Ed Meloan come as no real surprise but says he will defend the charges against Susan Meloan. Hawk told News 12, "There are 2 charges... she is innocent and there's going to be a trial."

According to court documents, Susan Meloan is accused of having sex with a 15 year old boy at the couple's home sometime in 1976.

As for Ed Meloan, Hawk says he continues to recover from a suicide attempt. According to Hawk, Meloan is cooperating with SLED investigators and wants to take responsibility for what he did.

Hawk said "In an interview before you asked if there will be a guilty plea. That depends. If he is innocent of the charges he will not plead guilty, if he's guilty he will take responsibility for what he did."

In his younger years Meloan was host of a television show called Shock Theater. Forty years later in a courtroom, without the coffin or cape, Meloan got to hear someone else's horror story.

SLED continues to build its case against Ed Meloan and they're asking anyone with information to come forward. Hawk says there could be as few as 3, or as many as a dozen victims.

I just want to know what is SLED doing now. Taking the victims across state lines should that not be FBI? Who were they taken to, they need to be up there with Meloan and his wife.

Dear Folks! If you don't believe what the witnesses KNOW to be true, please hold your tongue. This is a SLAP in the face to those children that were molested. If you will read the warrants on the public section of SLED you will see when his house was searched he had porn in his possession. Not just any porn, but those depicting children and INFANTS being raped and malled. Please just wish the victims well, and stop being cruel. If you will read the Chronicle you will see several of the victim/witnesses that are sharing known information.

at this point they are alleged crimes. granted it looks bad, but it typically does at first during the arrest and bonding stage - frequently defendants are overcharged or given "stacked" charges. often as time passes charges are dropped or reduced and motives or hidden agendas may be disclosed. this may or may not happen in this case. a person is not guilty of a crime until they are convicted at least in our country. that's one reason we have our brave men and women fighting for our freedom overseas.

we can't believe they are dragging his wife into this. if they just have an allegation from one victim without any witness or evidence, in our opinion that would not justify issuing an arrest warrant against her.
